The Association

Welcome to the Website for the Senior Women's Golf Association (South).

The VLGA started in 1921 by Miss Mabel Stringer. Her thinking behind its conception was to play golf with and against ladies over 50 years of age and it proved very popular, expanding rapidly throughout the UK. In 1968 the Southern Division of the VLGA was formed. The Midlands, The North and Scotland had by that time all started their own Associations.

Our boundaries stretch from Cornwall to Essex and take in counties to the South. One of the highlights of our year is the Jamboree which is a scratch round-robin event over three days, played in August and hosted by each Association in turn.  The LJGA organise the Inter-Association Cup (March/April) for players with HCI from 10.4 to 13.0 - competing against the Medics, the United Services and the Legals. The Field Day at the Berkshire is open to any members, and is another eagerly fought competition with the best combined 4 scores from the Blue Course and Red Course from each Association. In 2023, the VLGA won the Field Day Trophy.

Our fixture list includes a 36 hole Championship, two spring and autumn meetings, a summer meeting, and several fun competitions along with various matches against the Seniors (Woking GC) and the Elders (The Berkshire). Jackie Foster is the Champion for 2023.

Having recently celebrated our centenary in 2021 the SWGA South is one of the oldest women's golfing associations in England.

On 8th December 2023, the membership agreed to modernise it's name and is known as the Senior Women's Golf Association (South) or SWGA.
